What does the inauguration really mean?

I have watched some of the coverage today of the inauguration of President Barack Obama. It amazes me how much of a deal the media is making of this inauguration over every other inauguration I have seen in my life. there has been little attention paid to previous inaugurations in comparison to this one. Yes, I get it. Barack H. Obama is the first person of color to be elected to the highest office in our land. It is historic, and I realize that it shows the incredible distance that our country has moved in the area of race. However, I do not believe that simply electing an African American to the role of President moves us beyond racial tension in our country. In fact, I think that the big deal that everybody is making about it proves that we are far from arriving where we need to be. We are nowhere near arriving at the place that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned in his speech. Until we get to the place that race is not an issue at all, we are not there. The fact that the media is making such a huge deal about it proves that they are not close to arriving at such a place.

For me, when I began to support a candidate this past year, I did not take into consideration his or her color. Race had nothing to do with my views in the election process. I pray that we will one day arrive at a place where race will not matter, but I am not sure how to get there.

COLD!

Freezing doesn't really describe how it feels in central Ohio today. It is bone-chilling! It has been a strange winter up until now--snow, cold, it is January after all!
